The visitors got off to a quick start in today’s game, powering through our entire field to run in an early try which was duly converted. Bank took a few moments to re-group but managed to prevent any further score and then began to get into their game, making use of the speed on the wing to run in the equaliser.
Both teams had opportunities throughout the rest of the half, but in each case the defence was solid, until just before the break when Datchworth took the lead. The second half was equally well matched, although Bank had a growing sense of team spirit and determination, spearheaded by the scrum-half running the length of the pitch to score an early equaliser. They kept up unrelenting pressure, which forced a mistake from the visitors, quickly taken advantage of by the home side with some good handling and speed resulting in a third try to take the lead for the first time.
The visitors were undaunted though and finally managed to break through the Bank defence to score from close to the line. With one of the home side’s conversions having fallen short this meant the visitors were now in the lead again.
The game went right up to the wire, but with a minute to go the home team exploited an overlap to run in the winner.
With no subs available for the game, and the early lapse aside, the Bank team played flat out for the whole 50 minutes. The encouragement they gave each other was fantastic to watch. Head Coach, Gareth Crump, called it “their most complete performance to date” and certainly the parents are finding it increasingly difficult to award a player of the match, as every boy plays their part to the full.
