Season update from the Club Captains

Posted by Alasdhair Lochrane on 18 December 2017

Last Saturday was the halfway point in the season and boy it’s been very exciting first half of ‘season 17/18’.

The first team are second in the league having won 9 & lost 2. A second successive promotion is a real possibility but there is still a lot of rugby to go.

The best 1st team performance to date ironically was not a win, but a loss, against London Welsh. Bank was 1st place in the league & Welsh second. Welsh have made a clear statement they feel they belong in the Championship and intend to win the league outright. As the game developed, it became clear Welsh had a fight on their hand, as Bank played the majority of the rugby. Bank led in the 80th minute but unfortunately Welsh scored in the 81st minute to win 23 – 25. Frustrating to lose in the 81st minute but we played some excellent rugby and were the more exciting team. Hopefully the 1st team will progress in the second half of the season and we will re gain first place in the league.

The Sovereigns is a new side this season. To date they have played 8 and won 6. James Dooling and Dan Kirrane have put together, built and run this team from scratch. It’s always a challenge running a new side but James, Dan & the players have risen to the challenge. There are some great players who are exciting to watch and they have won the majority of their games. There is a host of good players returning from injury and travels in the New Year so the team will become stronger. A bit of structure on the pitch would make them a very tough team to beat. As they play more often together, I’m looking forward to seeing them really progress in the second half of the season.

The Picquets have faced some real challenges this season with a number of players retiring last year and the MMT promoting them up a league. They have had some tough games but Miles is leading from the front and building for the second half of the season. A number of injured players are again due back in the New Year and the Picquets should have a much stronger run in to April.

Many thanks and if we don’t see you before Christmas, have a great one.
